3 Ways to Blast Fat at the Pool this Summer

As the temperatures start to soar, there’s nothing quite as inviting as a cool, sparkling swimming pool. You don’t have to compromise your workout program in favor of pool time, though. Simply perform these water-based exercises in the pool while enjoying time with your family and friends.

Deep Water Jogging

If you’re comfortable swimming in deep water, taking your jogging routine to the pool is the perfect way to enjoy a hot summer day. Even though deep water jogging may feel easier than running on land, the movements are essentially the same and studies have shown that you can burn the same number of calories by jogging in the water as you would on land. Simply hit the water running, swinging your arms and legs just as fast as you would on land. You can run back and forth across the pool, then mix it up by running backward, treading water and “sliding” laterally across the pool while using a treading motion with your legs.<!–more–>

Upper Body Pulls

It’s not easy to pull yourself across the pool using nothing but your upper body strength, and it becomes even more difficult if you use your torso to create additional drag. To perform upper body pulls, sit on top of a kickboard and use your arms to pull yourself across the pool as you alternate between front crawl, breast stroke and butterfly arm strokes. It won’t take long for your back, chest and shoulders to start burning and your heart to start pumping. Try incorporating several trips back and forth across the pool to tone your upper body.

A 150-pound individual who swims recreationally for an hour can burn roughly 400 calories. That’s not too shabby for a leisurely swim. Add a competitive game of pool basketball to the mix and you can up your calorie burn considerably. Not only will you be running, jumping, shooting and defending, you’ll also be working against the resistance of the water, making the activity that much more difficult. Luckily, you’ll be having so much fun you won’t even realize how hard you’re working.
